Since 2023, SASSLA has urged the Department and the State Government to include educators in this scheme, without success. This issue continues to be a priority in SASSLA’s recently released Future Directions 2026 – 2028.
The exclusion of educators is unfair! The scheme already covers police, nurses, and other frontline public sector workers, yet educators remain unprotected – despite evidence showing educators face a 75% higher risk of assault than emergency services employees (Monash University, 2022). Even more concerning, allied support staff in schools, including psychologists and speech therapists, are covered, while educators are not. The recently released 2025 ACU Principal Health, Safety, and Wellbeing Report continues to highlight a concerning trend of increasing incidents of violence and bullying towards principals, exacerbating their stress levels and impacting their mental health. Everyone deserves a safe workplace, and it is simply intolerable that 54.2% of South Australian principals are reporting threats of violence and 55.1% have reported actual physical violence.
Any serious injury sustained by an educator as a result of criminal conduct, or from being placed in a dangerous situation at work, must be covered by the Additional Compensation Scheme. We continue to support education leaders who have experienced stalking and physical abuse, yet many are left without weekly compensation entitlements after two years while it is unsafe or detrimental for them to return to work.
Educators deserve the same protection as other frontline workers.
