Educators Must be Protected by the Workers Compensation Additional Compensation Scheme

The recently released 2024 ACU Principal Health, Safety, and Wellbeing Report continues to highlight a concerning trend of increasing incidents of violence and bullying towards principals, exacerbating their stress levels and impacting their mental health. Everyone deserves a safe workplace, and it is simply intolerable that nearly 54.5% of Australian principals are reporting threats of violence and 49.6% have reported actual physical violence.

SASSLA is the only employee representative body advocating for the extension of the Workers Compensation Additional Compensation Scheme to include the education workforce. This scheme is currently available to police, nurses, social workers and other groups providing front line services who are injured from conduct that is a criminal offence or in other circumstances where an employee is placed in a dangerous situation. Why are educators excluded when rates of violence against them are so high? As the legislation currently stands, if a psychologist or speech pathologist working in a school is punched by a student and seriously injured, they are covered by the Workers Compensation Additional Compensation Scheme yet educators are not. This must change!
