The SASSLA Board is excited to share our Leadership Policy Paper. Our aim is to represent the interests of our members by developing well-grounded policy positions on school and preschool leadership and advocating for a high quality public education system.
The policy paper highlights the crucial role that school and preschool leaders have in building and sustaining a high quality public education system. SASSLA, through the release of the policy paper, is providing a clear voice for school and preschool leaders to be heard in policy development and enterprise bargaining negotiations.
The policy paper shines a light on the risks the public education system is facing in attracting and retaining high quality candidates for leadership roles and the loss of educational leadership in the system as more time is being directed to compliance and accountability activities.
SASSLA has actively analysed research evidence and engaged with its members in identifying four policy areas where systemic changes are needed:
- Remuneration structures that recognise the increased work value of leadership roles.
- Clearly defined and well thought through professional development strategies that are owned by the education profession.
- Review and improvement of school management and decision making policies.
- A strategic approach to managing leader workload.
